Fenniarail and UPM to long term cooperation in rail transport
Fenniarail Oy and UPM have signed a long-term agreement to transport raw wood from the Finnish-Russian border to UPM’s Kaukas and Kymi mills.
The agreement is enabled due to the cross-border Rail Traffic was opened up to competition between Finland and Russia at the end of last year. This cross-boarder traffic can currently be operated, on the Finnish side, by a railway operator registered in an EU country. Fenniarail has been operating in cross-border transport since the spring of 2017. Fenniarail has been operating in domestic traffic since 2016.
Competitive rail transport is of great importance to Finnish industry
“The agreement is very significant in the Finnish railway market and an important opening for Fenniarail. Through its operations, Fenniarail has shown that there are competitive alternatives in the railway market. Competitive rail transport is of great importance to Finnish industry. We are proud that UPM has shown confidence in Fenniarail, ”says Petri Lempiäinen, Chairman of the Board of Fenniarail.
Shipments will begin at the end of this year. Fenniarail will hire and train new personnel for transportation.
