Rail cross border traffic open to competition
– Fenniarail increases capacity
Cross-border rail traffic between Finland and Russia opened up to competition on the 22 December 2016. This rail traffic has previously been exclusive right for the state owned railway operator VR Group. Fenniarail Oy responds to the market change by acquiring two new freight locomotives from the Czech CZ Loko.
All Finnish railway companies can now operate cross border traffic between Finland and Russia on the Finnish rail network. In the cross border traffic, the point of departure or destination of the transport is in Russia or in a country with a connection from the Russian rail network. Raw materials for industry and transit products are imported to Finland from Russia. Consumer goods and forest industry products are exported from Finland to Russia by rail.
The Finnish railway transport market
is becoming market-oriented
“The Finnish railway market is becoming market-oriented. The new situation in Russian traffic has increased customers’ interest in the new operator”.
“Fenniarail’s additional investment in new locomotives will improve the company’s competitiveness”, says Mr Petri Lempiäinen, Fenniarail Chairman of Board.
Fenniarail’s locomotives are the strongest in Finland
in terms of traction.
The new locomotives are of the same type as Fenniarail’s existing locomotives. “The experience of the locomotives operating is good. The locomotives meet today’s challenges in terms of operation and environmental characteristics. The locomotives function well in Finland’s demanding conditions, ”says Kimmo Rahkamo, CEO of Fenniarail.
The new locomotives are six-axle diesel locomotives. The locomotive’s engine meets the IIIA environmental classification. The locomotives are the strongest in Finland in terms of traction.
